Rebound Roulette stories

Eileen & Stumpy

rebound dose:

10 units NPH then 10 units Ultralente

dose after rebound:

2.5 units Ultraltente + 1/2 unit R
Stumpy was diagnosed with diabetes 5 years ago. The first year was a struggle.

With our vet's encouragement, we kept going up on our dosage. As we did so, our numbers got worse. A neonatal nurse practioner friend with  a 2 year old diabetic son suspected rebound (somogyi) by our numbers. She related that, although adults don't experience rebound often, young children with their faster metabolism often do experience it. She suspected a cat probably compare more to a young child (in terms of metabolism) than to a human adult.

Against my vet's advice and with the help of my friend, I backed down to 2 units twice a day of Hum U. I immediately experienced lower numbers at peak insulin times. We continued to have problems with a BG surge after meals. We then added the 1/2 unit of regular and, voila,  we have now been regulated for 4 years!
