Although no direct experience with DKA, I helped a local owner deal with DKA mainly at home (she's a nurse) and helped her make sure her vet provided proper treatment & support. I learned a lot over that week by posting to the FDMB, synthesizing the responses and referring that to the owner while staying on top of the current situation with her kitty so I could go back an ask for more input as things changed. I also have prior experience with another kitty with hyperthyroid condition and hypothyroid experience with a dog.

Serendipity suddenly began suffering from severe respiratory distress and died in November 2000, 5 months post dx, of what we think was a blood clot affecting her lungs. Rick and I still miss her very much. I remain active on the fdmb helping other sugarcat parents who need advice. When Serendipity was first dx, a friend gave me an acquaintance’s number who had owned a diabetic cat. It’s just me and Clara here and knowing someone close by who I may be able to trade “kitty coverage” with when I need to go out of town would be great.  Clara is 11 and has done well on Humulin U since her diagnosis.  She’s a very special cat and I’m extremely grateful that I’ve been able to manage her care since that ill-fated day in November 1998 when the vet called to tell me it wasn’t a urinary tract infection as I thought might be the reason she was drinking so much water.

Dr. Sakamoto does not push hometesting, but he supports it! In my case, he depends on it! Because my cat is such a bad patient at the vet, and gets major vet stress, they're unable to do curves on him. So, I do the curves for them. Saves me $$ and saves Dr. Sakamoto's nerves! But as I said - he doesn't push, so if you take your kitty to him, and you want to hometest, you need to let him know and he'll probably give you reasons why you wouldn't want to test at home. But, ultimately, it's up to you and if that is what you decide, he'll work with you. They're great over there! Everybody there is friendly and professional. Dr. Sakamoto and the rest of the staff treat their patients and their owners very well.

Barlow is 16 years old and blind as a result of his diabetes. We're having a hard time getting him regulated (but we'll get there). He's on PZI, 3 units BID. Barlow also takes 6 mg. of meth-B12 daily. He has suffered from neuropathy but is still mobile. At this point, there are no other complications.  "home testing rocks" - straight from Barlow's mouth!

She was dx'd with FD at 7, started on oral (glipizide, actos) w/no success then U, w/very little results. Switched to N with wonderful results.  She then started h*neym**n and did so until she diet 10-1-03 of T-cell lymphocytic leukemia. After being dx'd with FD she had problems with diarrhea & fur balls. Best remedy (rec'd by vet) was to mix small amount of canned pumpkin into her food.

Was up to 3.5 but due to recent illness down to 2. Was in good range at 3.5 but had to start over. Will be SLOWLY working way back up. Not hometesting yet but will be shortly. I work with Dr. Laura Leach at Beverly Oaks and really like her. She's very good with Sake and seems genuinely concerned with his well-being and actually follows-up on her own. My own doctors aren't that considerate. She doesn't seem like a big fan of hometesting but I think that if I show her I just want to use it to better educate myself about Sake's BG cycles she'll come around. They are the cheapest facility in the area, however, Dr. Leach has been very understanding of my financial situation and is working with me to help keep my bills down. They are also a 24-hour clinic so it is extremely convenient for me.

Casey was our first DC. He was 10 at diagnosis and lived another 8.5 years on NPH. We didn't know about hometesting until just before he died (CRF, not diabetes). Bandit did suffer from Diabetic Neuropathy for which I gave him Methyl B12 - 3 mg/day. On or about October 1, 2001 Bandit started on his second Honeymoon in as many years. He is testing consistently in the 60 - 90 mg/dl range now and is now getting GTF Chromium (200 mcg) several times a week plus Methyl B12 two times a week for maintenance. His Neuropathy has completely disappeared and he can again jump with the best of them. Neuropathy..needing insulin for years and was on glipizide..went by what the vet said to do..did not even test him again for two years after diagnoses..he is overweight..has had multiple tooth abscesses and now has no teeth..does just fine..he is 13 yrs old..neutered, siamese mix, has had hyperthyroidism last year and got the treatment..pills made him violently sick..projectile vomitting. My cat was saved by a referral to an Internal Medicine Specialst, Dr. Susan Yohn, Internal Medicine Referal Center 847.675.5430 in Skokie. This doctor is so unbelievably knowledgeable and compassionate. I wish human doctors were like her. Expensive, but cost-conscious and worth the money. A true angel if you need help. I am new at this, as I learn more, I will update. Nox was diagnosed in November, but I didn't learn enough about this disease until yesterday (May 2, 2002) to realize that I needed a new vet. My fault for not searching the web sooner. If I can find others to talk to, or help someone else get help for their pet, then I am glad I am here.
